Zimbabwe police raid MDC offices

Zimbabwean police have raided the MDC offices in the southern district of Gwanda and seized motorcycles meant to be used for its election campaign, says a Mail & Guardian Online report. ‘Police have confiscated 10 motorbikes following a raid on our Gwanda office,’ MDC spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora is quoted as saying. ‘These are ordinary motorbikes which were regularly procured and we wonder why the police are resorting to this heavy-handedness.’ Mwonzora said the police did not explain the reason for the seizure of the motorcycles, which were meant to be used by party officials to travel long distances during campaigns ahead of elections planned for later this year.

Immigration Overhaul Bill Survives Daylong Revamp

NPR’s congressional correspondent David Welna speaks with host Scott Simon about the flurry of last-minute amendments, most from conservative Republicans, to alter the bipartisan immigration legislation.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I’m Scott Simon. The immigration overhaul drawn up by the Senate’s Gang of Eight survived a daylong effort to significantly change it this week. Gomez knocks Mark Sanford as “pathetic” and a “career politician”

Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, best known for his extramarital affair with a woman from Argentina, won a rough-and-tumble US House race Tuesday night. But he’ll get no congratulatory note from fellow Republican Gabriel E. Gomez, the GOP nominee for Senate in Massachusetts.

In a statement late Tuesday night Gomez said he didn’t pay much attention to the race, but zinged Sanford anyway.

“Mark Sanford seems pathetic to me,” Gomez said. “This guy is another career politician who needs to go get a real job in the real world.”

There are obvious advantages to Gomez — running as a moderate in a state that usually elects Democrats — distancing him from a conservative Republican from the Deep South. But the hit cou

Man due in court for ’91 Needles murder

NEEDLES A man is scheduled to appear at Victorville Superior Court next Monday, charged with murder in a case originating in Needles that had gone unsolved for more than 20 years.

Jeffrey Campbell, 49, was arrested in Orlando, Fla., and extradited to San Bernardino on March 10 in connection with the 1991 shooting death of Scott Sprague, of Santa Cruz, who had been found in his vehicle off Interstate 40 and the US Highway 95 off-ramp by a passing motorist, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release.

A second suspect, 54-year-old Richard Williamson, was arrested April 30 in Las Vegas and is currently awaiting extradition to California in connection with the killing, according to the news release.

Last November, the sheriff’s Homicide Cold Case Team reopened the investigation into Sprague’s death and obtained arrest warrants for both men after interviewing Campbell and identifying both as suspects, according to the release.

The case is listed as one of nine high-profile cold cases on the county District Attorney’s website.

Anyone with additional information regarding this case should contact Sheriff’s Detectives Ryan Ford or Jerry Davenport at 909-387-3589.

Social care should have £2bn share of NHS budget, says MP

At least £2bn of the NHS budget should be used to meet the costs of social care for older people in a move that it is claimed would ultimately save the health service money, according to an influential backbench Tory MP.

Heather Wheeler, a member of the Conservative 1992 backbench committee and chair of the all-party group on local government, warns that the scale of the challenge facing councils in providing social care means the NHS budget must be re-examined to meet the current funding gap for social care.
