President Obama Re-Nominates Commissioner John Norris to FERC

On February 6, 2012, President Obama re-nominated current FERC Commissioner John Norris (D) to serve on the Commission for a five-year term ending June 30, 2017.

Commissioner Norris was first nominated to the Commission in June 2009 by President Obama to fill the vacant seat of former Chairman Kelliher with a term that expires June 30, 2012.  Before joining the Commission, Commissioner Norris served as Chief of Staff to the U.S.

3-year suspension for ex-Cravath associate jailed for assault

On Thursday, the Appellate Division, First Department, suspended Michael Zulandt for violating state attorney-ethics rules in connection with Zulandt’s 2008 plea of third-degree assault. Zulandt was convicted of slapping and pushing his girlfriend, calling her derogatory names, smashing her Cartier watch with a hammer and puncturing a painting. He was sentenced to 10 months of incarceration and ordered to pay about $8,300 in restitution.

Four Kenyan suspects to go on trial – ICC

International Criminal Court judges yesterday ordered four prominent Kenyans, including two potential presidential candidates, to stand trial for allegedly orchestrating a deadly wave of violence after their country’s disputed 2007 presidential election. Chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo had asked to bring two separate cases, reflecting the political and ethnic divisions behind Kenya’s post-election violence. Legalbrief reports that Presiding Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova addressed a public hearing in The Hague which was broadcast live in Kenya. Fears of new laws ‘unwarranted’

Green list MP Steffan Browning, who lives in Marlborough, wants the Government to reopen public consultation on the New Zealand Food Bill, now before Parliament.

A viral internet campaign is feeding mostly unwarranted fears about the proposed bill, Mr Browning said. These include the ability of people to sell produce from their front gate or even swap vegetables with neighbours.

It would be wise for a fresh Parliament to ensure concerns got a good airing rather than just making quick amendments to the bill, he said.

Mr Browning also urged Food Safety Minister Kate Wilkinson to produce draft changes before the bill’s second reading, which would probably be in February.
