Dan Arthrell, Katie Henke win District 71 primary, will meet in April 3 general election

Democrat Dan Arthrell and Republican Katie Henke were runaway winners in the state House District 71 special election primary Tuesday. The two each drew a large majority in the Brookside-based district and will meet in an April 3 general election to fill the vacant seat. Henke, a primary schoolteacher, won a five-way GOP primary with more than 75 percent of the vote. Attorney Gerald Lovoi finished a distant second. Arthrell took more than 85 percent of the vote in defeating attorney Robert Walpole in the Democratic primary. Arthrell is vice president of the Community Services Council, a nonprofit organization. Australia’s Slater & Gordon Snaps Up UK Personal Injury Firm, Russell Jones & Walker, for $84M

Slater Gordon, the world’s first publicly traded law firm is poised to grow again after agreeing to pay 53.8 million pounds (about $84 million in U.S. dollars) for a United Kingdom law firm that also specializes in personal injury work.

The acquisition of Russell Jones Walker is authorized under the Legal Services Act, but must be approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority before it is final, the Financial Times (reg. req.) reports.

Under the LSA, the U.K. is the world’s second country, after Australia, to allow law firms to be purchased on the open market by another firm or a nonlegal entity, the newspaper notes.

Law Student Goes ‘Homeless by Choice,’ Touts Value of Gym Club Membership

A Cardozo law student lived as a homeless person for nine weeks because he felt he didnt have any challenges.

The 2L, who called himself David, told Above the Law that he didnt intend to disrespect or marginalize anybody facing a real problem. I simply wanted to create a challenge in my own life, he said.

In an article called “Homeless by Choice,” the Yeshiva Observer published a Q-and-A interview with the student. David explained his decision to go homeless this way: So I’m in my second year at Cardozo and I already had an internship of my dream job. … I didn’t have romantic problems, and no financial problems, and my apartment was great, and the weather was great, and just everything was so good; yet I wasn’t satisfied, my life just felt meaningless.

Coburn won’t support Gingrich

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn is not inclined to support Newt Gingrich for president. But the normally verbose Oklahoma Republican does not want to talk about it. Given the history the two men share, Gingrich probably should just declare some sort of victory or at least consider himself lucky that Coburn is not doing more to knock him off his current front-runner perch in the Republican presidential primary. In the past, the Oklahoma Republican certainly did more than withhold his support. In 1997 Gingrich was House speaker, the man who had led the Republicans out of the political wilderness and into the majority for the first time in 40 years.
