Bloomberg: Uh, owe!
Mayor Bloomberg kept hammering away at Washington yesterday for failing to reach a deal that would extend the debt ceiling, warning that the nation is being damaged every day the tense stalemate continues between President Obama and Republican leaders.
“Just the fact that we’re talking about the possibility of default is putting doubts in the minds of people around the world that will stay there for a long time,” he said.
“Voters will blame all the incumbents; none of them will benefit,” Bloomberg said.
“You saw that back in the Newt Gingrich days [when officials] acted irresponsibly and, in fact, the party in power at that time paid a price. That can happen again.”
Asked what would happen if the United States stopped paying its bond debts to China, the mayor predicted such an apocalyptic event was beyond possibility.
“That would sort of end the world economy as we know it overnight,” he said. “That’s not going to happen.”
