Family of Student Killed in New York Files Suit Against Officer
The parents of a Massachusetts man who was shot and killed by New York police last year have filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the officer involved in the shooting.
The Boston Herald reports that the family of Danroy “DJ” Henry Jr., who was attending Pace University at the time of his death, have filed the legal action against officer Aaron Hess and the Village of Pleasantville, New York.
According to the news agency, Hess fatally wounded the 20-year-old Henry outside a bar last October after he allegedly hit two officers with his car and then refused to stop. Hess reportedly fired four shots at the moving vehicle.
The lawsuit claims that after the shooting, officers handcuffed Henry and delayed medical care, which may have contributed to his death.
Hess was reportedly cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in the case by a New York grand jury earlier this year. Four Pace University students who were with Henry and arrested following the shooting were reportedly also cleared of any criminal charge.
Although the suit does not disclose the amount of damages the family is seeking, a notice of claim filed last December reportedly asked for $120 million for pain and suffering.
