Caddo sheriff’s deputy accidentally shoots self
SHREVEPORT — A Caddo Parish sheriff’s deputy shot himself in the leg outside the parish jail as he was putting his gun into the holster.
Deputies say no prisoners were nearby when the accidental shooting happened and no one else was injured.
KTBS-TV in Shreveport says it happened just before 5 p.m. Monday outside the work release section of Caddo Correctional Center.
Sheriff Steve Prator says Deputy Larry Trant was shot in the thigh and lost a lot of blood but was expected to be OK. Prator says Trant was alert and talking on the way to the hospital.
Trant was in charge of work-release inmates and was preparing to go home for the day. Prator says he was transferring his gun from the van and into the holster when it discharged.
